When most people think of a wildfire, they picture flames racing across a mountainside. But for our watersheds, one of the greatest threats often begins after the smoke clears.
A burned landscape can no longer protect itself the way it once did. Trees, grasses, shrubs, and wildflowers that slowed rainfall, anchored soil, and filtered water may be gone. The result is a burn scar—a landscape that can send mud, ash, and debris rushing into the streams and reservoirs we rely on for drinking water, agriculture, recreation, and wildlife.
The wildfire may last days or weeks. Its impact on a watershed can last for years.
Healthy Landscapes Are Nature's Water Filters
A healthy mountainside works like a giant sponge.
Native plants:
Slow down rainfall.
Hold soil in place with deep root systems.
Allow water to soak into the ground.
